What is Carbon Chaos?

Carbon Chaos is an environmentally-themed game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It was developed during a 3 month industry project by six graduate students in the Masters of Digital Media program in Vancouver, BC.

What was the inspiration for the game?

The aesthetic inspiration for the game came from all the travellers who will be visiting Vancouver in 2010. The team wanted to make a game that is fast-paced, fun and easy to play, but they also wanted it to have meaning. Using an environmental theme allowed the team to create a unique gaming experience and send a meaningful message to players at the same time. The gameplay was inspired by games like Flight Control, Diner Dash and Snake. These games are simple, intuitive, easy to pick up and play, and very fun for a wide range of audiences. We aimed to capitalize on these elements of play while also adding a few surprises of our own...

How do you play the game?

The goal of each level is to get all the passengers in the queue to their destinations before time runs out.

There are three elements to the game:

  1. Passengers

    • Each passenger has a specific destination they want to go to, indicated by their color. Pick up passengers by touching them, and release them over a vehicle to drop them into that vehicle.
    • If a vehicle is full or is already set to a different destination, the passenger will be returned to the queue.
  2. Vehicles

    • Vehicles' destinations are set when the first passenger is dropped into them. You can reset a vehicle's destination and return passengers to the queue by dropping the vehicle over the passenger queue.
    • Send vehicles to destinations by clicking on the vehicle, then drawing a complete line to the proper destination (indicated by color). Vehicles will then start travelling along the path that has been drawn for them.
    • Busses and cars emit CO2 as they travel. Other busses and cars will stop if a CO2 cloud is in their way, but bicycles will not. CO2 disappears after a few seconds.
  3. Destinations

    • Points and time are awarded when vehicles arrive at their destinations for each passenger the vehicle is holding.
    • Dropping passengers at destinations also adds to your “Green Roof meter”. When this meter is full, destinations will sparkle green. Touching a green destination will send out a shockwave that will reset your “green roof meter” and clear nearby CO2.
